Staging and production syncing

In Progress

As a cPanel user I would like cPanel to add the ability to duplicate my WordPress site into a 'staging' environment, allowing me to test upgrades and other changes without having to effect my production site.

I would also like to be able to sync those changes from my staging environment back to my production environment, to avoid having to make the changes twice.

For developers, directly modifying a website in production is a bad practice in my opinion.

Staging area for development with an option to then sync that environment to the live website would be a very useful feature. Looking forward to it :-)

Is this likely to be picked up? This would be a great feature for cPanel users and admins alike. Adding this feature would also allow hosting providers to try rival the bigger names who provide simple staging for sites like WP. Or other hosts on non cPanel systems with some kind of staging built in. No one likes being charged by their hosts for 3rd party staging ;)

Do we have an idea of when this feature may be released or in development?

I have seen this feature on other web hosts in their cPanel area.

Today, this feature should be standard.

This does seem like a no-brainer for a modern SDLC. Bonus points if you can somehow maintain a copy of the existing Prod while moving Stage into position, in case a revert is needed.

I'd like to add weight to this request. It is now becoming a standard feature on lots of hosting platforms. With my current hosting company, they offer this on all my shared hosting accounts. As sites get bigger and have more visitors, I move these over to VPS hosting and cpanel, then lose the staging feature, when really, these are the sites most desperate for staging, as they are often plugin heavy and ecommerce stores, where taking the site offline to update and test, loses revenue for my clients. Surely it's not too tricky to enable this feature?

There is a cPanel extension you can use for this, look for staging in the https://applications.cpanel.net listing.

Javi - what is the extension? You just link us to the applications list?

Yeah, desperately looking for this feature. If this can be delivered with the default cPanel bundle, that will be great! We can get rid of finding an alternate solution. Because, everyone is looking for this feature and as a hosting provider, you will need to search for an alternate option until cPanel launches it with the default bundle.

And by chance, if you go with an alternate solution, the next question will be, how it will be managed when cPanel launches this as a feature? Will the current third-party tool integration will be intact when the feature is released by cPanel? and so on.

So, it would be great if the feature comes with cPanel itself instead of going with any third-party solution.

There's great 3rd party plugin support for this now. I doubt cPanel would think of this as a priority compared to other higher ranking features right now. We handle this now with Installatron.

Searching the apps finds nothing. Can you give names or links? Thanks

Hi, thanks. Which plugin you are referring to. Is it the same described in this thread earlier by Javi ?.. i.e. staging4hosters ??

Harry - that is the only one I have found - and with only 7months... not sure if I trust it.

Per my comment, Installatron does this. Just google it since we can't put links into comments to third party sites.

Installtron looks interesting.. i but i don't see anything regarding the subject of this post. Can you please be a bit more specific as to which app i should be looking for on your website.

The subject is cloning and copying for staging. Installatron does both.

What's the 3rd party plugin?

Alot of our website projects are in wordpress so its pretty easy to deploy a project.. but would be amazing to have a 1 click solution for our clients

About this:

>Will the current third-party tool integration will be intact when the feature is released by cPanel?

Yes, it will keep working even if cPanel launches their own feature as it doesn't modify the cPanel sites at all.

About this comment:

It has been around since 2015, but under different names. It is in production since then. The posting in the apps catalog is 7 months old, that is true.

Installatron has been around since 2008

Installatron works a lot better than Softaculous for this right?

They both have pros/cons

We use Softaculous, it works great and costs a lot less.

We're always looking to improve though, can you tell us some Installatron pros to help us choose?

Thanks!

This is what Installatron says

Great to hear! One feature Installatron will have ahead of cPanel continuing to improve their WP support is it will sync changes from the clone to production so that you don't have to swap. And Installatron supports dozens of other scripts. We use it to manage WP, Joomla and Moodle.

I see this "In progress". Can we know the approx date of this release? Thanks.

This would really increase cPanel's value. Easier to support WP. Hope we could see this feature very soon
