SpamAssassin when CPanel is backup mail server (aka. secondary MX)

Julien Tessier shared this idea 11 years ago
Open Discussion

Following a bug reported in support request 4369233, I discovered CPanel does not consider as a bug the fact SpamAssassin is not run in backup mail server configuration / secondary MX configuration.

The idea of this feature request is to have CPanel respect the SpamAssassin on switch and enable SpamAssassin even when configured as backup mail server configuration, instead of forwarding the emails to the primary server without running SpamAssassin, because most spammers use secondary MX servers to bypass spam-filtering.

I did find an easy fix for this issue: in the ACL default_spam_scan_check in exim.conf, you just need to change +local_domains by +relay_domains.

With this, emails sent to domains set up as backup mail server are being scanned correctly.

Here's the best way to do it to enable SpamAssassin for backup mail configuration (and preventing cPanel from overwriting the configuration).

Go to Exim advanced editor and put the content of the attached file in custom_end_spam_scan_check.

Hope this helps :)

Will this do for all backup MX or just when spam assassin is enabled in their account?

Also, do you need to enable anything else for it to work? like enabling assassin globally?
