Refreshed Modern WHM / cPanel Design

Chad shared this idea 11 years ago
Completed

The cPanel / WHM designs are extremely oudated, mundane and non-intuitive.

Please, once and for all do a 100% refresh. More clean, minimalistic and "flat" design.

There is no excuse or reason why cPanel cannot have a real nice design and better UI.

They are working on new theme, it would not look like on your suggestions but still it will be much better then current one. Problem is development is really slow they are still in alpha and most likely it will pass more then 1-2 years before this become stable ...

WHM/cPanel is always known for cluttered dumb ass themes and user interfaces, its just matter they are there in business since very long and only because lot of people hard to find better alternative for commercial grade deployment made them stay in market. Its not the case any more, if they still keep the same attitude towards clients, then they are fooling themselves.

Big changes are afoot. I think you'll like what we have in store.

Turn beautiful theme in WHM

Our current prototypes to this end... (see attached)

IMO WHM needs a make over far more than cpanel. Use of space on right side and icon button size are awful. Every word in WHM should be searchable from the top left search dialogue.

Have a look over the attached screenshot of my team's current development efforts and let me know what you think.

Looks good.

Could it be possible to have a version with the stats like what's in whmc client area. Image attached for reference.

photo
1

Certainly, though we're keeping the initial implementation rather simple until we can add to our official SDK for designing your own widgets. Ideally any widgets we implements should also use that SDK.

Will Paper Lantern be phased out and replaced by this one?

photo

This *is* Paper Lantern

photo

You guys need all-new nicer, flat cleaner icons. Something like font awesome or other font icons, but colored.

Honestly though, my 3 examples from TWO years ago still outdo the concept design you have. Not to be a prick about it, it's just honest feedback. 2 years later, cPanel's design is still mundane and non-intuitive. Look how many people have complained. My 3 examples again, two years old and still far ahead in quality interface, color combo, layout.

photo
1

like these? - We've been working with an external designer to refresh the icons. Not quite finished with them just yet but certainly open to feedback.

photo
1

The eventual plan with these is to implement them as SVGs within the product

photo
1

PLEASE DO NOT GO FLAT! THAT IS THE WORT WEB DESIGN IN THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET!

photo
1

It is the best of the three and it is great if you are using a hand held device. It sucks for most anyone who uses a real computer and works for a living! :)

Seriously that while flat UI thing is HORRIBLE on anything but a hand held device. It is so bulky and all objects are way too big, plus the whole flat UI makes it very hard to differentiate between anything on a page. It wastes so much screen space (that is going to be the nature of the beast in any page designed for a hand held when you use in on a computer). I really wish that the powers that be would not JUST design for handhelds and basically tell the people who use real computers "too bad we do not code for you any more". Sadly that is the way the web is going and IMHO it is not a very good path to take.

Adam I don't like the coming soon layout. Those long bars are unnecessary and a waste of space IMO.

photo
2

My suggestion, to solve that issue....

Make the boxes movable and resizeable, even make the whole panel customisable, as

everyone wants different things and different colour scheme as well.

photo
1

A also agree with this. The long bars are a waste of space and just look out of place. Everything else looks great though.

photo
2

We are certainly planning on iterating on this design with your feedback. We'd like to go in the direction of releasing updates to our SDK so that you can define your own widgets for the index page in addition to the ones we ship by default.

photo
1

It might be cool to see some type of "quick action or widget" features for commonly used features in place of those bars.

photo
1

Love the idea!

photo
1

@PbG - long bars...do you mean this area here?

photo
1

No Adam I refer to the red, orange, purple and green bars used to represent Bandwidth, Database etc.

photo
1

Currently we have the quotas broken out into separate widgets. We've considered putting them all in the same widget once we have enough other widgets to fill the dashboard out.

photo
1

My biggest issue with that design is that most of that information being displayed isn't actionable stuff. I'm a big fan of hiding anything that's irrelevant to the user, for ex., they likely don't care if they're using 0/5 databases until it's going to somehow impede them.

Hide anything that's irrelevant, & make it easier to get to what is relevant.

photo
1

Honestly I do not like ANYTHING about that layout at all.

photo
1

I understand.

We are retaining the Retro style for Paper Lantern so that you can continue to remain with the familiar interface that you're used to. We've even made a special layout specifically for the retro style which other styles can use if they'd prefer to work within the previous layout.

photo
1

That is some good news. I thought that at one point the retro style was going to be deleted. Did that plan get changed? Now the current issue is this, once I dig into the retro style and make my own custom styles based off of it, how can I make only my custom styles available to my customers (specifically i do NOT want hem to be able to select/use the canned default or retro style, only mine. This would be functionally equivalent to enabling/disabling styles in the X3 live editor.

photo
1

You had the correct impression: the retro style will be deprecated in the future. We don't currently have a deprecation schedule for it.

Regarding the ability to specify which styles are available to end-users, I see that you filed a separate feature request for this idea. It would be best to keep conversation and brainstorming regarding that idea in that conversation thread so that we can consider it uniquely.

photo
1

Just to be clear, the current Paper Lantern will remain (similar or as is) and this new design will be in addition, correct?

photo
1

Thanks Adam I will check the status of that FR to see how it is going.

As far as Retro goes your statement is a tad ambiguous. I am not trying to be picky here I just want to make sure I fully understand. You said that I HAD the right impression yet you go on to say that the style will be deprecated. So I am I correct to deduce that the thing that changed was earlier this deprecation of retro was very close to a done deal and now (while it is still planned) the deprecation is not even in the pipeline?

If so, this kind of concerns me because this boisl down to merely kicking the can down the road.

photo
1

@kanowack - no. This new design is being implemented as a part of Paper Lantern's continuing development.

photo
1

@pczero - I was intending to say that your first impression (regarding the Retro Style being deprecated in the future) was indeed correct. The retro style should not be a part of anyone's long term plan. It will continue to exist for the foreseeable future, however I can currently only see up to a calendar-year (2016-10) into it's future.

photo
1

The Retro theme in our oppinion either should be properly finished or should not exist. It feels wrong and wouln't take much to fix (remove bootstraps paddings for the icons, make everything much closer to the original x3 theme).

When you say that you will force users who are still using X3 to Retro, I feel that it will make them think the new theme is bad.

We will have to force our clients to paper lantern before this update. Please either finish making Retro more like X3 or give cPanel admins a clear choice between forcing to Retro or Paperlantern when the time comes.

photo
1

@monarobase - The retro style got quite a lot of work done to it in 11.52. Are you basing your comments on that or on 11.50? (If it's on 11.52, please let me know specifics you'd like to see fixed...we may have to take that part of the convo into email/chat)

photo
1

Hello, it's based on 11.50, we will test it again in 11.52 when it goes to the stable branch. Thanks ! :)

photo
1

1) Adam the retro in 11.52 is pretty close to the X3 style. I really think you should NOT delete it. That is the only style that s desktop (non-handheld) friendly. I understand that you guys want to make cPanel more table friendly but you should not kill desktop use in the process. This is the whole thing that killed Windows 8 remember...

2) If I clone all of the Retro code to a custom style, will it still work once you get rid of Retro?

3) PLEASE work on adding an option for server owners to enable/disable PL styles. Neither Basic nor Retro match my custom branding at all and they do not fit in the product mix of my custom styles. Can you please provide some feedback as to whetehr this is even being considered at all and if so what the status of it is?

photo
1

Move away from bars and move toward pie

photo
1

Agree with you.

photo
1

I'd rather you stay away form the fluffy and glitzy bar/pie/whatever interface and stay with the clean simple and easy to use style of X3. Why in the world you would drop something that you posted on your own blog is "WILDLY POPULAR" is beyond me...

photo
1

I am currently planning on focusing on updates to the WHM interface after we complete the deprecation schedule for X3. The first release without X3 is planned for v60 (see https://blog.cpanel.com/updated-deprecation-schedule-for-x3/ ) so the best estimate I can give you right now for a redux of WHM's interface is "after that."

We are currently working with a designer to refresh the antiquated icons found in the main WHM interface though. Expect that refresh shortly.

photo
1

Adam just so I fully understand the process please verify the following. The last we were told is that those who have created custom x3 UIs will still be able to use them for as long as we wish with accounts that are currently set up with X3. Going forward we will not be able to create any new accounts with X3. Are both of these still valid and will they be as of v60?

photo
1

At the moment, we're hoping to provide the means for you to be able to retain X3 indefinitely if you'd like to do that. For the record, looking at our current product plan, you'd be very silly to do this as we have a lot of exciting things in store (absolutely none of which will be backported to X3 after v60.)

Currently, we are doing preliminary research to create a build of cpanel which does not have X3 in it in order to understand how deep X3's tendrils go into the rest of the codebase. No results to report as of yet on that though.

photo
1

Well that sounds a lot like a definite maybe! :) Any idea of when we will get a definitive answer to this?

BTW "silly" is a tad of a harsh (and quite ad hominen) thing to say as you have no idea of the wants and needs of my client base.

photo
1

My apologies, @pczero. It's important that people understand that I don't condone using X3 after it's official deprecation and removal. It was not intended as an ad hominem; I'm very excited about the future of cPanel & WHM and I don't want anyone to miss out on that. Your situation is always going to be unique and I know you'll make the best decision based on all the facts at hand for your customers.

photo
1

v58 just appeared on our EDGE tier this morning. It currently does not have the new stats sidebar in it so don't get confused if you install it and look for that. We're still addressing performance issues and making a few tweaks to it.

photo
1

Please include ability to sort icons in WHM.

photo
1

Which kinds of sort parameters would you like to sort by?

photo
1

Hello, sorry if this looks like hijacking the post, but when I've readed the last two replies I immediately thought that when you use the search filter in WHM it also could be cool if the home icons were filtered at the same time the menu at the left is filtered, too. That could be a good improvement to the visual help of the UI when filtering options out.

Just saying. Sorry if bumping or if this one should go to a new feature request.

photo
2

Definitely a hi-jack, but not a terrible idea at all! Since the original request is so broad, I figured we could allow this here. :D
