What advantages does PowerDNS have over BIND, NSD or MyDNS?

It stores records in MySQL database but also has a caching nameserver

capability. Also supports DNSSEC.

PowerDNS is the best DNS server to integrate with third party solutions and providers. My public dns is based on PowerDNS, my PTR records database liked with RIPE is hosted on PowerDNS, with MySQL master-slave using a unique SQL server with different databases. PowerDNS is for me the best solution to made simple a big DNS cluster because is made as a base to be big, very big...

Power DNS as of 3.1.x has a MyDNS backend module. It shouldn't be that hard to make Power DNS work over a MyDNS database.

For our deployment bind reload is absolutely brutal, add to the fact that our registration services are using powerdns and this would be a welcome addition to cpanel. Lack of dnssec in mydns is an issue in the current offering and since bind is also an issue for larger deployments its really difficult for us.

My reason for PowerDNS would be that I don't need to have to wait 50 minutes to get the whole cPanel installed including horde and other webmail programs, and end up with only a few parts used. It means my DNSonly server disc has growen twice in space over the last year and I need to rebuild them again as last update is not fitting any more on the disc :-(( this is not so good, why is cPanel not able to make separated install with an .iso files and only necessary software on and not the whole cPanel VPS/ded. server install. just my 2c.

If I understand correctly this option would just be to tell cPanel to edit a distant database instead of editing bind files in the DNS cluster configuration.

I've been thinking for some time that cPanel chould make DNS pluggable, there are quite a few external DNS services that cPanel should be able to use via an api or directly accessing a database. This would allow users to use API bases anycast DNS servers or setup custom DNS server solutions like powerdns…

Up-voted this, we have been looking at switching all DNS operations to PowerDNS, would be nice to have direct/supported integration from cPanel.

Yes it would be great, especially because the virtualization control panels works with powerdns, so if you will add this features we will be able to use the same nameservers for cPanel server and Virtualization server for reverse dns

Already use PowerDNS slaves although it would be nice if the master was full powerdns

Been a year, and i'm still wanting this feature. PowerDNS in cpanel would make it so much more useful.

Same here, need this one, very good with integration with other services

My admin is getting MAD, because cPanel STILL does not support PowerDNS! Common you guys...

I'd love to see PowerDNS as a native option in cpanel.

Currently creating a new setup, and it looks like I'm going to have to fudge it to get the control with PowerDNS. :/

I'd love to see this implemented, it would allow us to give the clients the ability to create their own rDNS records in SolusVM. It's better than spending for 2 more servers to create a PowerDNS cluster as well as a cPanel-DNSONLY.

Hello!

We have done some initial testing of PowerDNS and are excited with our results. We are looking to begin development of incorporating this into cPanel & WHM in the version 60 development cycle.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

just one, when is the expected date for this release/update ?

thanks

We're hoping to build this in our next development cycle, for which we're planning today. If we are able to make that happen, it be included in cPanel & WHM version 60, which should be release in around 3 - 4 months. We'll make sure that there is an update posted here again as soon as we have one!

We've officially started development on this for version 60! Updating the status of this request to "In-Progress" accordingly.

Will this be for external servers only or also for internal DNS servers ? Will you use MySQL by default or bind style file format ?

photo
1

In the current plan this will be part of the product available on the local machine. Our first step will be implementing it with BIND format, with the hope of expanding that to include an SQL backend. We are planning on using PowerDNS to implement DNSSEC.

photo
2

So basicaly there will be no file format difference and the main difference would be the ability to have DNSSEC.

When you say local machine only, do you mean that powerdns will not be an option at the beginning when using cPanel DNS Only ? Or were you talking about remote mysql servers ?

photo

We are not looking to implement this for DNSOnly at this time. We want to focus on getting it working on a local system first and then see if we can leverage the built in clustering of pdns to handle some of the DNSOnly issues.

Just keep going foward... I look forward to being able to use the entire strength of PowerDNS. Please be sure to include a Power Admin or Like interface..

We have run PDNS with a MySQL back end for years for our non-cPanel stuff (using PowrAdmin as the front end). It's pretty brain dead simple to get setup and pretty easy to add in another node by just adding another slave to the replication. We also use PDNS recursor to split the load between authoritative and resolving.

Adding PDNS in 'stand alone' mode on a server is interesting, but there is no functionality for us until it's added in DNS only. There would also need to be a way to import all the bind zones.

PowerDNS provides scripts such as zone2sql. See https://doc.powerdns.com/md/authoritative/migration/

PowerDNS is now available as a DNS application option in the first development build of cPanel & WHM version 60: 59.9999.58

Any ETA, or approximate date for a stable/public release? Thanks!

photo

Not yet, no. I can tell you that we won't go to CURRENT anytime before October 3rd.

photo

That's correct; those requests are outside the scope of work that's currently being done, but those two are definitely on our radar. If we are able to we want to work on them for 62, but we'll have to see how things play out between now and then.
