MariaDB support for DNSONLY cPanel

Give us the option to upgrade to MariaDB on DNSONLY cPanel servers. If you won't support switching from MySQL to MariaDB, at least give us the option to choose MariaDB as the default database when installing cPanel for the first time.

In your opinion, how would the DNSONLY product benefit from using MariaDB?

Some benefits I can think of off the top of my head:

1) Supposedly uses less resources compared to MySQL. Whether this is true or not, we'll never know unless we try.

2) Long term support, theoretically better since cPanel has mentioned they're planning to eventually switch to MariaDB anyway.

3) I've already switched to using MariaDB on my regular cPanel servers. Just makes sense to also move the DNSONLY servers to MariaDB as well.

I've already gotten in touch with support. Apparently setting mysql-version=10.0 in cpanel.config during provisioning works now, but that's assuming the servers aren't already live.

Otherwise, they suggested manually switching to MariaDB from the command line, which isn't officially supported by cPanel, so if your server gets hosed, then that's it.

By the way, just wanted to add that the pages/scripts to convert from MySQL to MariaDB are already working in regular cPanel anyway, so it's not like adding this to a DNSONLY cPanel will require that much more work from your developers.

DNSONLY is a special built product for syncing and managing DNS zones. We intentionally do not expose a lot of the controls that provide the same flexibility as cPanel & WHM. Right now we find that MySQL suffices for the light database needs of DNSONLY. If, or when, we change to using MariaDB by default is when we would change it in DNSONLY.

Yeah, it's not something that has to happen now. I think the main concern, at least for me, is what if 5 years from now, cPHulk suddenly breaks because the version of MySQL on the DNS server is too old.

Personally, I don't really login to the DNS servers that often to do any maintenance work. In fact, the reason I like using cPanel so much is pretty much because I CAN leave a server alone for years without having to worry about manually upgrading, etc... the software on the server.

Now, on a regular cPanel server, the db is never automatically upgraded because that would break Apache, etc.. So the root user usually has to manually upgrade the database via WHM. That's understandable.

However, if the regular upgrade scripts on the DNSONLY version are anything like the upgrade scripts on the regular cPanel version, that means MySQL will forever be stuck at whatever version was installed at the time we originally set up the server. That's not good.

>>> If, or when, we change to using MariaDB by default is when we would change it in DNSONLY.

I guess one question that comes to mind is, are you going to automagically upgrade MySQL to MariaDB via upcp at some point in the future if MariaDB does become the default?

You raise some good points. The short answer is: Yes, we upgrade MySQL during upcp for DNSONLY.

Ah, ok. In that case, carry on! =D

Just wanted to follow up with whoever's in charge of DNSONLY updates. It's been almost a year, and I still haven't seen any of my DNSONLY servers updated to MariaDB. I'm still stuck on mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.5.50 which, as far as I know, has already reached EOL since the end of 2015. Weren't the DNSONLY servers supposed to be automatically upgraded to MariaDB 10 according to Kenneth's last reply?

Even just giving us the option in older DNSONLY servers to upgrade to mysql 5.6 would be better than nothing at this point. At least we'd still be able to get security updates.

Just wanted to add that I made a new feature request relating to MySQL/MariaDB updates for DNSONLY servers. Hope it gets more attention than this FP.
