logging for rearrange accounts

Hello,

As a server administrator and technical support analyst, I would like to see rearrange accounts log it's actions. This way I can better recover when something goes wrong.

Thank you for your consideration.

As of cPanel & WHM v56 the Rearrange Account feature employs the use of the Transfer Tool, which means more stability and much more verbose logging!

Mary, can you provide us with some specific examples? Specifically, what actions would you like to be logged? Is it just a log you'd like to see or more verbose output?

Thank you.

I would like a log, or logging directed to the cPanel error log, because I would rather not have to attempt to re-run a rearrange because the user closed the window before copying the output seen just to collect the error message. Sometimes it takes hours before the error occurs, but many times the rearrange is successful the second time, so we never know what went wrong the first time.

I can't really provide much in the way of specific examples, because I don't have logs to tell me when or why things broke. This is part of why I want logs.

Logs are the first thing a systems administrator looks at when trying to solve a problem. Frequently even before or concurrently with attempting to reproduce the issue. It is essential that every function that cPanel/WHM performs logs something, somewhere, especially when it fails.

Specific items I want logged:

Error messages: I believe most of this operation is reads and writes - I need to know if the file wasn't copied because of a read failure or a write failure, and if the OS returns a more verbose explanation, I would like to know that too.

I would like to know when re-arrange account starts sections. It moves the home directory and updates some configuration files. I would like to see a log entry telling me when it starts and finishes updating configs. Preferably, I would like it to log that it has successfully written "x" config file (or failed to successfully write "x" config file due to $OS_error).

Since it's copying some large directories, I'd like to know when it starts and completes copying the mail and public_html directories.

I do not want to know the status of successfully copied files. This would make the log huge and hard to read.

Once this skeleton logging is in place, we will be able to determine if there's a section where most failures take place where more verbose logging would be useful. But I think this is likely to be sufficient logging for us to at least narrow down when issues occur with the rearrange accounts feature.

Thanks!
