FFmpeg is a cross-platform solution for streaming audio and video as well as recording and conversion. Its also useful to convert multimedia files between various formats. FFmpeg includes libavcodec audio/video codec library in it.

ffmpeg has patent encumbrance problems. If we provided ffmpeg it would be without any of the codecs, or other parts of the application, that are patent encumbered. Would an ffmpeg implementation with most of the codecs removed be useful to you?

Hi nirjonadda,

Have you had any success using FFmpeg as an EasyApache custom opt mod yet?

Hi Kenneth,

it's possible to install CODECS later.... maybe thanks to a webpannel like mod_security provider tools...

So everything is done with in compliancy with legals.

Could you provide me with some details on how this would look? while I agree that ffmpeg could be a useful tool for our customers, I'm not entirely sure of how to package it in a way that doesn't violate US copyright law.

Could you provide me with an example of another US commercial entity providing ffmpeg that I could use as a reference as to how they worked through these issues?

patents, not copyright :)

Everybody can install the FFMPEG libraries, they are free and open.

The problem of the patents is related to the plugins and codecs that you need to install withit which allow you to do 99% of the commands. This means that without plugins/codecs the FFMPEG is useless.

Ok, this is clear.

Then cPanel can provide blank installation (no problem with patent and copyright) and give you a GENERIC tool to upload the plugins/codecs. This will be done directly by root admin then cPanel cannot be considered responsable to provide any SPECIFIC tool to install a SPECIFIC plugin under patent or copyright.

You just provide a generic plugin/codec installer witch in "bona fide" server administrator will use to install only plugins and codecs that have right to use.

I think it's easy:

1) install blank FFMPEG

2) FFMPEG plugin installer (mod_security add vendor like).

I currently have FFMPEG installed on my server, I've never used it for anything major only generating thumbnails for uploaded videos but it works. I installed FFMPEG via yum (not sure what repo) and use a modified version of ffmpeg-php to add to Apache.

Happy to provide the code/instructions as ffmpeg-php itself is no longer supported.
