HTML Editor (ckeditor) - need Browse Server button for Links

Open Discussion

Since the advent of the new HTML Editor (CKeditor) in WHM 11.40, we have customers complaining because they are limited in adding links [as compared to the previous editor].

In the previous editor, they could browse the server for a local file that they wanted to link to, and the editor/filemanager was smart enough to add the correct link with the correct path information.

Now, in order to add a link, one has to do this:

a. Type in a description for the link down inside the HTML editor

b. Highlight that newly created description

c. Click on the Links icon

d. Manually type in the full URL to the file on the server

This requires that they know the location of the file beforehand as well as the exact spelling. As such, it is very prone to having filenames and locations mistyped.

The HTML Editor --> Links needs to have a "Browse Server" button so that a person can simply browse to the file that they want to link to and have it autoinserted into the link when they save it, complete with proper path information.

NOTE: As an example, just take a look at HTML Editor --> Images , which does indeed have a Browse Server button. This same ability needs to be added to HTML Editor --> Links

We have no current plans to change HTML editor utilities or include addition HTML editor utilities beyond CKeditor. Note that we are open to considerations for including additional CKeditor plugins. If you locate a CKeditor plugin that extends functionality you'd like, please post a feature request here for it. Beyond that, the best way to get new functionality included into CKeditor is to raise those requests with CKeditor's devs directly.

As we will strive to keep CKeditor up-to-date, any features that are added into CKeditor itself will naturally make their way into cPanel & WHM's deployment of it.

Please refer such feature requests to CKeditor directly: http://ckeditor.com/get-involved

This feature is part of the standard Links addon you have enabled from ckeditor not third party - at least it is currently a feature of it(not sure about 3 yrs ago)... You have not enabled this feature it seems.

The native Link plugin states this: "The ability to insert a link with the URL using multiple protocols, including an external file if a file manager is integrated." It actually allows an external file (from desktop) via "upload" [send to server] as well as a website file already uploaded. Both of these aspects have been enabled in the Images plugin, so I imagine it works similarly to enable this.

See image of the [Browse Server] buttonand [Upload] tab.

Currently, this functionality has not been enabled by cPanel - no "browse server" button appears nor any "upload" tab. User can only link to full/external website URLs.
