Ask for comments input when whitelisting IP's for Greylisting

Hello guys! I, as a sysadmin, when browsing the Reports of Greylisting and discover IP's that need to be whitelisted, cPanel just allow to whitelist the IPs with two clicks. Awesome. The only problem is that it has happened that sometimes you have to whitelist a long list of IP's and would be great if cPanel opened a modal window asking for a comment to add to the whitelisted IP. Also, adding the full date would be sweet too. Because when you go back to the Trusted Hosts list, you are unable to tell what, when or why those IP's are whitelisted.

Even if you use to migrate the sqlite database to another server, you will benefit from having a nice list with crystal clear comments to decide if you want to remove irrelevant IP's from whitelist when uploading it onto another cPanel servers.

Hope others second this, since it is an usability improvement.

Thanks!

Hi,

You can Edit the comments of the entries for Trusted Hosts in the Trusted Hosts tab. We added the action of adding Trusted Hosts as a convenience.

For more complex notations, I recommend using the Trusted Hosts tab.

mmm nope, I think you dind't get my idea. Maybe you haven't thought of this real life use case. Let's see:

When you are in the need of whitelisting LOTS of IPs that dont belong to ESP's, like local banks, government agencies, well known companies... you can simply sort the list by "From Address" to find out who needs to be whitelisted. You have the gear icon to choose whether to whitelist just that IP or the 24/16 IP range. This is nice so far. BUT... if you need to whitelist 20 IPs, it would be convenient to have a modal asking for comments THERE, WITHIN THAT SCREEN. So that you won't need to take note apart and then add the comments in the Trusted Hosts listing. Why must we do 5-6 extra clicks when you just could add a modal window and perform the commenting thing in just 2 clicks? It's an usability enhancement my friend!

Hope you understand and may be able to reproduce the effort and time that currently you need to whitelist a bunch of IP's.

If I'm wrong please let me know how can I add comments at the time I whitelist IP's from the Reports screen.

Thanks!

I do understand what you are looking for. And I agree that it can be useful.

I am concerned about adding an additional step to that process. Perhaps we could add another option to that dropdown for customized entries. That way you could customize your range and comments in a modal, but other customers can keep their current functionality.

Well, one way I can think of to avoid "adding" an additional step for everyone, would be adding another radio input option in the Tweak Settings screen with something like:

"Ask for comments when whitelisting IP/Zone at Greylisting Reports", defaulted to NO in order to don't change current behaviour.

Now that's how I would do it. Maybe you will find a better UI option.

The problem I see on your approach, is that you are just saving one click :) but adding options to the dropdown wouldn't just add options in the mind of the user? More options to choose from, the more likely they opt for the wrong one :) In exchange, my proposal in this comment just add the modal menu only for those who will really need it, without bothering the rest of the user base.

The problem with my approach is that you are forcing people to always enter a comment. So, an easily clickable "Add to Whitelist" button must be present in such a modal windows and do its job whether you enter or not a comment.

What do you think?

Hi Kent,

Sorry about the lack of movement on this feature. The team that would do this has been busy with some other work. I'll get a story on our backlog to take a look at this. Though I can't give you an ETA on this, I can tell you that we are working heavily on addon domains to accounts and will likely not pick this up until that is done. I will speak to one of my UI devs to see about a minimal option to see what we can do when we get to it.

Thank you for your patience.
