Add option to redirect webmail subdomain to hostname instead of origin domain name

did-vmonroig shared this idea 11 years ago
Needs Feedback

This is currently working for domain.tld/webmail, domain.tld/whm and domain.tld/cpanel, and with behavior selectable in Tweak options | Redirection, but has no effect for subdomains webmail.domain.tld, whm.domain.tld and cpanel.domain.tld.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'll make sure that the next time we touch this system we keep this in mind, as well as this other, related redirect request:

To get a consitent way of accessing all services I would like to point out that access webmail via the hostname and a wildcardcert without noncommon ports would be a good start. A redirection to these proxydomains of the host would provide customers without the own certs a way to access webmail too. Since EXIM,Dovcecot and Courier are still unable to use certs of the customer account they have to use the hostname anyway.

What about redirecting webmail.domain to the hostname? Do we have a feature for this as well?

I've votee for this feature too. It wiuld be nice to webmail.userdomain redirect to webmail.hostname as well as cpanel.userdomain redirect to cpanel.hostname thus removing all issues related to not having an ssl cert. A host can just buy a single wildcard cert to protect all of these subdomains accross all of its servers, using sni to remove the need of an extra ip address.

We have installed a wild card ssl to our domain name.

After that no webmail.dmain will work it goes to root

We feel that a feature to add a wild card cert is needed to just root

that then allows all subs to be ssl and remove all complications.

I have an SSL certificate for my hostname.

My config in WHM is:

Always redirect to SSL from Off: On.

Require SSL from: Off

If my client open: domain.tld/webmail , then redirect to SSL with hostname, no certificate error

If my client open: webmail.domain.tld , then go to webmail without SSL.

if in WHM the configuration was:Always redirect to SSL from Off: On.

Require SSL from: On

If my client open: domain.tld/webmail , then redirect to SSL with hostname, no certificate error.

If my client open: webmail.domain.tld , then go to webmail with SSL, no hostname and SSL certificate error.

I'm going through some of our historical requests, and I wanted to clarify this one a bit.

The request doesn't seem to indicate a goal for the desired behavior. Is the problem the SSL mismatch error when navigating to https://webmail.domain.tld? Proxy-subdomains typically are used to avoid using the webmail and cPanel ports, which means redirecting to the hostname:port would negate the usefulness of proxy-subdomains.

offcourse it's not useless, because people are used too and can easily remember webmail.domain.tld it makes sense. Do the same for subproxy.domain.tld as you did for domain.tld/proxy to check on SSL and if not available go to hostname of certificate. If customer has SSL they are kept happy anyway.

Everybody would be happy and it solves certificate errors and builds trust. Also key selling point for certificates for hosters (want your own secure URL? Buy one from us).

I'm sorry, can you clarify for me what the goal would be here? It seems like you are asking for this feature, when enabled, to add this functionality:

webmail.domain.tld redirects to https://hostname:2096

domain.tld/webmail redirects to https://hostname:2096

I would certainly hope subdomains remain a proxy to standard ports rather than ever redirecting to non-standard ports. I know there are other better feature requests for this idea but the goal should be that https://webmail.domain.tld should be served over port 443 and use the domain's SSL when that is available. I think this request would be that if an SSL cert is not matching or if a WHM administrator prefers to redirect, that the URL could route to https://webmail.hostname.domain.tld and served over port 443 with the hostname SSL so no error is encountered. That's at least how I read this request (based selfishly on my own needs for wanting a port 443 option for cPanel off a domain that is not the server hostname).

I agree, redirecting to webmail.hostname.domain.com would be the best solution and allowing hosts to install an ssl cert for this would defenetly be the best solution.
