Ability to select zone template upon account creation in WHM
There is currently a functionality that lists all the zone templates in a particular folder : /var/cpanel/zonetemplates. All the custom zone templates that the user creates and drops in that folder are listed in the admin, but there doesn't seem to have any functionality that allows us to select them. WHM chooses arbitrarly "standardvirtualftp" which is okay in most cases, but very often, on a larger scale, you probably want your emails to be served by another service. I use OpenSRS hosted emails service, for example, but you could simply want to point your emails towards Gmail to enable Google Apps for business with your own domain.
Right now, we have to change the MX (SPF and DKIM as well for everything to go smoothly) manually everytime even though it could easily be an option in the account creation page in WHM. I don't know if these templates need to appear in CPanel on a per-account basis, but having this option in WHM would allow us to reapply a template to a domain after creation as well which would be awesome for clients only migrating their emails or something in those lines.
That could even ben picked as a feature in the feature list to be able to make packages such as "Lower-end hosting, local emails" or "Lower-end hosting, Google Apps emails" or "Lower-end hosting, OpenSRS emails".
Have any of you run into such a situation that you would need that feature?
Yes, is really unusual, for a product of this caliber not to have custom DNS zones
These custom DNS zones should able to:
1. Be selected during account creation
2. Be able to edit an existing domain and select the zone we want, to change
Imagine having 500-1000 domain in the DNS and having to "Edit" manually each domain
People now have Google Apps, office365, and so many other for email and other settings, these require quite a lot of zones
Waiting for an answer

This isn't on our roadmap yet, but it's certainly something we might consider. I'm very interested to see that there's only 5 votes for this feature in a year on the site, but I look forward to seeing more feedback as well!

I've always been interested in this because our clients sometimes want e-mails somewhere else, have to point some services, pre-configure rdns for MailChimp, etc. but some of these have to be granular depending on the case. Having templates upon account creation instead of linking them to the packages would be great.

I think an ability to create and manually select a DNS zone template would certainly be of value. Not sure about cPanel access... however definitely through WHM. I'm cautious about client access (I guess that could be in Tweaks maybe) as sometimes too many toys causes misconfiguration. However, yes... an ability to create and select zone templates would be a good idea.

Other examples of how this would be useful is some clients have 3rd party spam filtering, or Exchange or 365 mail. These require a number of additional dns entries that would otherwise be incompatible if just injected into the default template.

I've just configured a DNS infrastructure with cPanel and cPanel DNSONLY for a customer. After setting up everything I discover that cPanel doesn't have any feature for the customer to select a custom DNS zone from templates.

Hi Benny,
I think if one were to put a call out, you'd get a pretty positive response on this feature. I asked about it a year ago or so as well. I'd tend to agree with it being a WHM feature first... the perhaps later consider adding it to cPanel.
I used to use DNS Made Easy before I switched my hosting company to mostly using DNS Only by cPanel on my own name servers. DNS Made Easy provided the ability to create one's own templates... which worked very well for me as I could create the specific ones I required. That certainly mitigated overloading the supplier's programmers with special requests... so perhaps that's an avenue to consider... rather than creating the actual templates.
DNS Made Easy allowed you to create the zones you required for say, Gmail... and them memorize that layout. Any entry or field specific to the domain being served or set up would of course be represented by a placeholder like [domain].

Hi,
This is something I was looking for and got this thread.
Having some pre-defined templates (entered manually) would be an added advantage.
