Support for Rocky Linux

We support Alma Linux 8 as the successor for CentOS 8. Alma Linux, according to its website, is also community-based and community governed. I'm curious to know the advantages Rocky Linux offers you over Alma Linux.

I'm curious to understand the reasoning for choosing not to take advantage of having 2 Centos 8 based OSs, when in doing so would take very little effort?

Both are 1:1 replacement of Centos 8, so where's the logic in not supporting both?

Also, AlmaLinux is though community based, it's closely associated with CloudLinux. Having 2 options which are bug-to-bug compatible would be better for the community. (We do use multiple servers with CloudLinux, nothing against them).

RockyLinux development is headed by the original CentOS founder, which is a very positive point about it.

Also, as both are bug-to-bug compatible, it shouldn't be much work to support RockyLinux IMHO.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on supporting Rocky Linux. We are confident they will meet their objectives and Alma Linux will be a distribution completely independent of Cloud Linux.

I see your point of view, but on the other hand, many users think that Rocky Linux will be a outdated Linux distro, because it's hard to mantain a OS without almost any money. On the other hand, AlmaLinux can be a nice enter door to CloudLinux community, so CLN has real interest on making it a very good product.

CLN exists because they offer very nice features for hosting and business. Features that neither AlmaLinux or CentOS has. However, for the most of the community, RedHat was offering nothing that CentOS didn't have.

Once the CentOS 8 End of Life happens and only Alma is supported ongoing (Yes ubuntu project has restarted but I will not be putting any production network on it for a while.) At this time CloudLinux will get to choose what is the premium feature ie Cloud Linux and what is the RHEL Clone ie Alma. It will no longer be determined by RHEL.

Alma transparency is a joke for the same reason Kenneth bashed Rocky. If we as a community ever do claim conflict of interest and fork Alma. That same day Alma will have a bank account of $1usd so then the "Low funding" of Rocky will also be true of Alma. No Community OS can build a bank account unless there is a community and by one of the largest CentOS software deployments cPanel not accepting Rocky you are trying to make sure there is no community and trying to kill the project causing your vary own argument.

I am in no way saying Rocky is better or Alma is better I am saying that supporting the OS that has the exact same reason to burn us as the prior supported os is a bad idea. I do personally like that the owner of cloud Linux is trying to help in this problem but until that project is FULLY FULLY isolated from Cloud Linux with NONE of the cloud Linux staff or board (Board Community voted with no seats appointed by cloud or even suggested by cloud) they can not meet the transparency the claim to aim for which again puts them in same budget as Rocky.

Even if the Install was allowed and a warning that Rocky is unsupported as an OS but software of cPanel support only given i could see this working this gives the community the choice they already made by choosing a community os before they choose to install and allows cPanel the ability to wash their hands of OS errors and only deal with their software.

Let's keep the discussion focused on supporting Rocky Linux instead of attacking people or projects.

We don't have immediate plans to support Rocky Linux, at least not until our work on Ubuntu completes. Our customers expect a great experience no matter which operating system or Linux distro is in use.

IRT Alma Linux 8 being "the successor" to CentOS Linux 8, this is incorrect. Alma Linux 8 is a rebuild of the RHEL 8 sources, just like Rocky Linux 8 is and is no different in that respect and holds no position as being the CentOS 8 "successor", official or otherwise.

As for "removing their conflict of interest", Alma Linux is irrevocably tied to Cloud Linux, and this conflict cannot be removed now or ever. To think otherwise, no matter what they say is folly.

To ask people here to focus on supporting Rocky Linux but not voice their distrust for Alma Linux (or other projects for that matter) completely misses the point. Distrust of other corporate-backed projects is precisely the reason why support for Rocky Linux is being asked for. People have been burned already by CentOS cutting their EOL short and want alternatives, but what you are saying is that no alternative to Alma Linux will be offered by you. This decision is a complete disservice to your customers and even has negative ramifications that far exceed your customer base.

Please don't put support for Rocky Linux on hold while you complete support for other, unrelated, distros. Due to the binary compatible nature of Rocky Linux to CentOS Linux 8 (and by extension to Alma Linux) support for Rocky Linux should not require building of any additional packages, or any additional work beyond what has already been undertaken to support CentOS Linux 8 and Alma Linux, beyond a few minor configuration tweaks. Comparing the work needed to add support for Ubuntu vs what is needed to add support for Rocky Linux is, therefore, a faulty comparison.

Please don't insult your customer's intelligence or their choice of OS by suggesting that we must use Alma Linux when many customers have a clear bias towards other RHEL 8 derivatives, Rocky Linux being a major one of them. To suggest to us that we must choose Alma after we have already made a choice to use Rocky with such a blase attitude demonstrates a clear bias on your part which does a disservice to even cPanel's own image.

RockyLinux 8 support is planned for Version 108 at this time.
