Improve the Automatically Detect Configuration for Email Routing Configuration
As a System Administrator, I would like the existing "Automatically Detect Configuration" feature in WHM > Email Routing Configuration to be SMARTER, so as to reduce the incidences of when it INCORRECTLY assumes that "Local Mail Exchanger" is correct, when it's not.
Or at least to flag/report issues where it's not sure.
The consquence of this "Automatically Detect Configuration" functionality getting it WRONG is that email is NOT successfully delivered via forms on the website to the intended inboxes of the site owner. Instead, it's stored locally.
This happens when, for example, the LOCAL **NON-AUTHORATITIVE** DNS zone files for the domain incorrectly has a local MX record.
So what the "Automatically Detect Configuration" service needs to do to be smarter is to check an EXTERNAL DNS record to see what the rest of the world thinks the correct MX record is for the domain is.
If the EXTERNAL MX record agrees with the local MX record - GREAT! Nothing to do.
But if the EXTERNAL MX record does NOT agree with the local MX record... then this is highly likely to cause incorrect/unexpected email routing issues.
Which is what happened yesterday to a new client of hours after we'd been hosting their site for 2 weeks, and then they reported that they'd not received a single enquiry via their forms since re-hosting with this.
Thanks for your consideration,
Ross
